How to create a hair routine for your relaxed hair

Having healthy hair doesn’t come overnight. You need a hair routine to get your hair to a healthy state. With a hair routine you are about to get your hair in shape! Yes, see it like working out. There needs to be a plan in place in order to achieve the body or healthy weight that you want.

“GET READY TO GET YOU RELAXED HAIR IN SHAPE”

Your hair regimen needs a routine that fits your lifestyle. In this post I will share my routine, so that you can see for yourself how to build your own routine.

Wash days
Figure out on which day(s) you are going to wash your hair. Having a specific day gives you room to plan your day. For example, my wash days are on Saturdays. Even my friends know how I spend my Saturday mornings.

When it comes to washing your hair I would advise once a week or every other week.  If you are someone that washes more than two times a week, I need to tell you, stop doing that. It’s important to have a clean scalp, but too much washing will dry out your scalp.

Deep condition
With every wash it’s necessary to follow up with a deep “moisturizing” conditioner. A deep conditioner will give your hair the nutrients that it needs. I think you already know on which days I deep condition my hair. If you said on Saturday’s, then you guessed it right.

Deep conditioning my hair is my favourite step out of my whole routine. There are some many benefits when it comes to using a conditioner. Will talk about that more in another post.

“THE BESTS STEP IS DEEP CONDITIONING YOUR HAIR”

Moisturize your hair
To keep your hair moisturized in between wash days using a cream or lotion every day, will help fight the dryness. I moisturize my hair every night or every other night before I go to bed. Doing this step in the evening gives the product enough time to work its magic.

Trimming your hair
Hairdressers advise to trim your every 8 – 12 weeks (2 – 3 months) and I agree! We often neglect our dead ends, because we focus to much on having long hair. You need to get rid of the dead ends in order to have the healthy length that you want.

Holding on to a routine, when it comes to trimming your hair, will keep the dead ends away. I’m going to be honest, I have neglected with keeping up with trimming my hair. That’s why I make sure to write down the date when I trim or cut my hair and plan ahead.

“DON’T GO LONGER THAN 3 MONTH WITH TRIMMING YOUR HAIR HAIR”

Now it’s up to you to create the routine that fits your lifestyle or tweak the routine that you already have. The main goal for your routine is to upkeep your healthy hair care. So don’t stress yourself about it, because you can always adjust the routine.

Shampoo and conditioner, create your basic wash routine

It’s best to have a routine that caters to your hair when you are taking care of your relaxed hair at home. Finding a routine aka regimen for my hair hasn’t been an easy road, but the outcome to sticking to a routine did wonders. I mean, before my hair journey my new growth was soft & stiff and know I’m able to stretch my hair for 20+ weeks.

I never thought stretching for so long was possible, but this is post not about stretching, so let’s stay on topic.

Basic hair care routine

How did my hair care routine come about? Thank God for other relaxed ladies online that shared their routine, but also doing my homework and creating my own routine was key to getting my hair on the right track.

In the post “regimen for relaxed hair” I shared three basic tips on how to build your regimen. My first tip to a basic regimen was about shampoo & condition.

This step is really my saviour when it comes to getting my hair healthy. When I started my hair journey, the #1 focus was on getting my hair softer/smoother. My hair was really dry & stiff. Even when I would moisturized my hair, there was no shine to it at all. So first thing was to be consistent with shampooing and especially doing deep condition treatments.

There are different types of shampoos & conditioners. In my routine I make sure to use moisture based products that will contribute to making my hair softer. Yes moisture is really important, but please don’t skip on protein.

When I got into hair care I found out that protein is needed to strengthen your hair. Also using a protein based product is a great way to bring your hair texture back to life.

Because of the different types of shampoos and conditioners I created a routine when I would use a specific product

My shampoo & conditioner routine

Week 1
Clarify shampoo paired with a moisturizing deep conditioner

Week 2
Moisturizing shampoo paired with a moisturizing deep conditioner

Week 3
Moisturizing shampoo paired with a protein based conditioner followed up with moisturizing conditioner

Week 4
Moisturized shampoo paired with a moisturizing deep conditioner

This is a basic routine, my foundation. Having a steady routine makes it really easy for picking out which product to use. It’s possible to switch things up. For example if you feel that in week 2 your hair is really weak, don’t wait for week 3 to do a protein treatment. My hair rule is always to listen to your hair and give your hair what it needs at that moment.

Do you have a routine based on the different types of shampoos and conditioners? Or do you just go in and wash your hair? Comment down below and let’s talk.

With care,

Have a hair regimen to keep your relaxed hair healthy!

Taking care of you hair can be a task. Let me emphasize on the word CAN. In the beginning of my hair journey I did everything what I thought was needed, but over the years, I have found a hair regimen that works for me, my lifestyle &  hair.

hair regimen

a systematic plan especially designed to improve and maintain the health of your hair.

“Create a hair routine that your hair needs”

I spoke a little bit about having a hair regimen a.k.a. a hair routine that caters to your hair. There is no one way regimen when it comes to having & maintaining healthy hair, but you need a hair regimen.

Before I go in and share my hair regimen, I want to make it clear I’m not talking about hair products. A hair regimen is a routine based on treatments that you do for your hair.

“Have a hair routine”

Let’s dive in! What is my hair regimen?

My hair regimen is planned in a specific routine based on daily, weekly & monthly treatments. I like to be consistent with certain moisture or protein based treatments, that I know my hair needs. That’s why that some treatment will be more frequent than other treatments, but together brings the balance when it comes to having healthy hair.

[1] when I’m not wearing a protective hair style, I wash my hair every week. Washing my hair weekly is a must for my hair. Also conditioning my hair weekly is a must. So cleaning my scalp & hair followed up with a conditioner is an important treatment to maintain healthy hair.

When it comes to shampoo’s & conditioners I also plan out what type of product I use. It’s not every time that I use a moisturizing shampoo or conditioner. It’s also necessary to clarify or do a protein treatment.

[2] during the week I moisturize my hair daily or every other day. I like to moisturize my hair at night, so that the product has enough time to sink into my hair.

[3] to keep my length hair I will trim or dust my ends every 8 weeks. If your hair is “super” healthy, no split ends, you don’t need to trim every 8 weeks. Find out what works for you, but please don’t hold on to unhealthy ends for too long.

Now that we have the basic regimen in place, now you can continue with creating which treatment you are going to do.

Leave a comment down below if you want a post  or a video about the hair treatments based on my routine.

July; retouching my new growth with ORS No-Lye Relaxer

It’s time for the creamy crack! I’m fighting with myself when I’m styling my hair. Being 20 weeks post relaxer is getting exhausting. With my next stretch I’m going back to 16 weeks of stretching. As always for retouching my new growth I used ORS No-Lye Relaxer.

Let’s start the process

I don’t like for my new growth to be bone straight, so I manipulate the relaxer by adding a product. This time around I used oils instead of a light conditioner. To be honest I was out of conditioner, that’s why I added oils to the mixture. I used 1 cup of Olive oil and 1 cup of Castor oil. I like this oils for my hair and they were in hands reach.

Take your time and really mix the oil and relaxer together. I needs to be one solid mixture. On my YouTube Channel I have a video on how to transform your ORS No-Lye Relaxer.

To protect the perimeter of my face & the previous relaxed hair I used Vaseline. To be honest I can’t remember if I based my scalp with Vaseline. I think not, because I was bit lazy, but I really needed to retouch my new growth.

The creamy crack

As I always I parted my hair in four sections and started at the back with applying the relaxer. When applying the relaxer I was a little bit heavy handed. I wanted to finish this process quick. Because I was so heavy handed I only applied the relaxer in one round.

To smooth out my new growth, I used my fingers and just massage the relaxer to my new growth.

Applying and smoothing out my new growth took about 20 minutes. Every time when I retouch I make sure I stick to 15  – 20 minutes, because I want some texture in my hair.

Retouching end results

So when it was time to wash out the relaxer I noticed my hair looking real sleek. First in my mind was “ow no I have done too much”. But when I was done shampooing my hair, I was a little bite hyped. My hair was so shiny & and soft. I really saw a difference in results when I compare adding a light conditioner vs an oil to the relaxer.

I love my texlaxed texture, but how the freshly relaxed part is feeling now, I really like it. Hmmm, I don’t what this is about, because I haven’t cared for the bone straight look in years.

Let’s see how this is going to play out.
